Maxima’s Mexican Lager

The Horse

Glencoe Maxima is the most recent horse to join our herd. She is an experienced competitor and we bought her to compete. Unfortunately shortly after we got her she got an abscess in one of her hind hooves that blew out through the coronet, requiring some specialist shoeing from our farrier and requiring an extended rest period. Seeing as she was 9 and a maiden mare, we decided to put her into foal to a stallion by Hazelwood Conman.

The Beer

The Mexican Lager is a recipe I’ve been working on for a long time. With equal part American Ale Malt, Flaked Maize and Pale Malt it has plenty of body and a balanced bitterness from Magnum is just right. If you want it a little drier, just add some enzymes into the fermenter. The Citra dry hop is optional, but gives you the lime flavour straight from the tap.

Mexican Lager: A True Taste of Mexico

Mexican lager, also known as cerveza lager, is a staple in Mexican beer culture and has gained significant popularity worldwide. Known for its refreshing and crisp taste, this style of beer has a unique character that sets it apart from other lagers.

One of the defining characteristics of Mexican lager is its light and pale golden colour. It is commonly enjoyed as a thirst-quenching beverage, particularly in warm weather, making it a perfect choice for those seeking a refreshing beer.
Mexican lagers are often brewed with adjunct grains, such as corn or rice, in addition to malted barley. This traditional brewing technique gives the beer its signature light body and smooth mouthfeel. The addition of these ingredients contributes to its distinctive flavour profile, setting it apart from other lagers on the market.

The flavour of Mexican lager is typically mild and well-balanced. It provides a delicate interplay between the subtle sweetness of the malted barley and the light bitterness of the hops. This harmonious combination gives Mexican lagers a clean and crisp taste that is highly drinkable.

Mexican lager is also characterised by its low to moderate alcohol content, making it a go-to choice for those who prefer a sessionable beer. With a typically lower ABV (alcohol by volume) than other beer styles, it allows for longer and more sociable drinking sessions.

One of the most popular Mexican lagers is the well-known Corona Extra, which has become a symbol of Mexican beer around the world. It has a signature light-bodied profile with a refreshing taste, often garnished with a fresh lime wedge. Corona Extra and similar Mexican lagers are often enjoyed on beaches, at barbecues, or alongside spicy Mexican cuisine.
When it comes to food pairings, Mexican lagers complement a wide range of dishes. From tacos and quesadillas to ceviche and guacamole, their light and crisp nature makes them an ideal accompaniment to the vibrant flavours of Mexican cuisine. The beer's carbonation helps cleanse the palate and balance out spiciness, creating a satisfying dining experience.
Whether you're seeking a refreshing beer to quench your thirst or searching for the perfect pairing for your favourite Mexican dish, Mexican lager offers a delightful option. Its light body, smooth mouthfeel, and balanced flavour make it an alluring choice for beer enthusiasts who appreciate the unique tastes and traditions of Mexico. So, raise a glass of this liquid craftsmanship and savor the essence of Mexican brewing. Salud!
